Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a 2007 first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the fourth major installment in the Call of Duty series. The game breaks away from the WWII setting of the previous entries and instead takes place in modern times. Developed for more than two years, Modern Warfare was released in November 2007 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows, and was carried over to the Wii as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Reflex Edition in 2009.

The story takes place in the year 2011, where a radical leader has executed the president of an anonymous country in the Middle East, and an ultra-nationalist movement ignites a civil war in Russia. Conflicts are viewed from the perspective of a US Marine Force reconnaissance sergeant and a British SAS command and unfold in various locations including the UK, the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine. . The multiplayer part of the game features various game modes and contains a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons, weapon accessories, and camouflage schemes as they progress.

The game received universal praise from critics, and the gameplay and story received special praise, while critics were directed at the game's failure to substantially innovate the first-person shooter genre. The game won numerous awards from gaming websites, including IGN's "Best Xbox 360 Game". It was the best-selling game worldwide in 2007, selling around seven million copies in January 2008 and almost sixteen million copies in November 2013. It was followed by two sequels that continue the story: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ( 2009) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011).
